Much has been reported in the press not long ago about the bingo industry singing the blues as a result of the anti cigarette law in Britain. Things have become so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested huge aid to assist in keeping the businesses from going bankrupt. However will the internet variation of this quintessential game offer a lifeline, or might it never compare to its real life kin?
Bingo is an enduring game historically played by the "blue rinse" generation. For all that the game of late had experienced a recent comeback in popularity with younger members of society deciding to visit the bingo halls in place of the clubs on a weekend. All this is about to be reversed with the enacting of the anti cigarette law across United Kingdom.
No longer will gamblers be permitted to puff on cigarettes whilst marking off their numbers. From the summer of 2007 all public locations will no longer be permitted to allow smoking in their venues and this includes Bingo parlors, one of the most favored places where people enjoy smoking.
The results of the anti smoking law can already be felt in Scotland where smoking is already banned in the bingo parlours. Players have plummeted and the industry is literally struggling for to stay alive. But where have the players gone? Surely they have not cast aside this ancient game?
The answer is on the internet. Gamblers realise that they can enjoy bingo from their computer whilst enjoying a beverage and fag and still have a chance at huge prizes. This is a recent development and has happened bordering on perfect with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course gambling on on the web is unlikely to replace the collective aspect of heading over to the bingo parlour, but for a demographic of men and women the law has left a good many bingo players with no choice.
