• Might the Smoking Ban in England Force Bingo Players On to the Net?

    [ English ]

Much has been reported in the papers not long ago concerning the bingo industry being hurt as a consequence of the cigarette ban in Britain. Conditions have become so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested huge tax breaks to assist in keeping the industry from going bankrupt. But can the net adaptation of this classic game provide a lifeline, or might it not compare to its real life equivalent?

Bingo is an ancient game generally enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. Although the game recently had seen a recent resurgence in popularity with younger people deciding to go to the bingo halls rather than the discos on a Saturday night. All this is about to be reversed with the legislating of the anti cigarette law throughout Britain.

No longer will players be allowed to puff on cigarettes while marking numbers. Beginning in the summer of 2007 every public area will not be allowed to permit cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo parlours, one of the most favorite areas where folks enjoy smoking.

The results of the anti cigarette law can already be looked at in Scotland where cigarettes are already barred in the bingo parlours. Numbers have dropped and the business is beyond a doubt fighting for its life. But where did the players go? Surely they have not given up on this classic game?

The answer is on the internet. Gamblers know that they can bet on bingo using their computer whilst enjoying a beverage and cig and in the end, enjoy huge prizes. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened bordering on perfect with the ban on cigarettes.

Of course gambling on on the internet can never replace the collective aspect of heading down to the bingo parlor, but for a demographic of people the law has left a lot of bingo players with no alternative.
